In 1666, Austria was defeated by Prussia in the Battle of Königgrätz, and the following year, the so-called Ausgleich (compromise) led to the establishment of a dual monarchy with Austria and Hungary, in which Austria left everything except its military and diplomatic affairs in the hands of an independent Hungary (the Austro-Hungarian Dual Empire). During the period of relative stability before World War I, the Austrian-Hungarian economy developed rapidly.
