Isinglass - Isinglass (English spelling)

A type of fish glue. It has long been made in Europe from the swim bladders of fish such as cod, with sturgeon being considered the best. The swim bladders are washed to remove impurities, then cut lengthwise into several pieces and spread out on a board to dry in the sun. The outer membrane is removed and pressure is applied to form the almost pure collagen in the middle layer into a flat sheet, which is the product. It is yellowish, tough and translucent. It is used as an adhesive to bond jewelry, to repair parchment, and as an ingredient in bandages, and as a clarifier in the production of beer, cider, wine, etc.

魚膠(ぎょこう)の一種。古くからヨーロッパで主としてタラなどの魚類のうきぶくろを原料としてつくられ、チョウザメのものが最良とされている。うきぶくろを洗浄して不純物を除去し、縦に数枚に切断して板の上に広げて日光で乾燥させる。外膜を除去して圧力を加え、中層のほとんど純粋なコラーゲン部を平板状にして製品とする。黄色みを帯び、強靭(きょうじん)で半透明。接着剤として宝石類の接着や羊皮紙の修復、絆創膏(ばんそうこう)の原料に用いられ、また清澄剤としてビール、サイダー、ワインなどの製造に使用される。
