1741‐1825 Painter. Born in Zurich. He spent most of his artistic career in England, where his English name was Henry Fuseli. While he was in Berlin as a young man, his talent for painting was recognized by the British ambassador to Germany, and he lived in London from 1764, where J. Reynolds encouraged him to pursue oil painting. He stayed in Italy from 1770 to 1778, and was deeply impressed by Michelangelo's gloomy figures and their deep, tragic expressions of emotion. In 1865, he translated JJ Winckelmann's "Meditations on Greek Painting and Sculpture" into English, and in 1899 he became a professor of painting at the Royal Academy, and in 1804 he became its director, becoming involved in the neoclassical art and academicism of the time.
