Painter. Born in Zurich. He spent most of his artistic career in England, where his English name was Henry Fuseli. While he was in Berlin as a young man, his talent for painting was recognized by the British ambassador to Germany, and he lived in London from 1764, where J. Reynolds encouraged him to pursue oil painting. He stayed in Italy from 1770 to 1778, and was deeply impressed by Michelangelo's gloomy figures and their deep, tragic expressions of emotion. In 1865, he translated JJ Winckelmann's "Meditations on Greek Painting and Sculpture" into English, and in 1899 he became a professor of painting at the Royal Academy, and in 1804 he became its director, becoming involved in the neoclassical art and academicism of the time.

画家。チューリヒ生れ。芸術活動のほとんどをイギリスで行い，英語名はヘンリー･フューズリHenry Fuseli。青年のころベルリン滞在中に駐独イギリス大使に画才を認められ，1764年以降ロンドンに住み，J.レーノルズに油彩画の本格的制作を勧められる。70‐78年イタリアに滞在し，ミケランジェロの鬱屈した雰囲気の人物像や深い悲劇的感情表現に強烈な感銘を受ける。65年にJ.J.ウィンケルマンの《ギリシアの絵画と彫刻についての省察》を英訳し，99年にはローヤル･アカデミーの絵画教授，1804年には同院長に就任するなど，当時の新古典主義美術やアカデミズムにかかわりをもった。
