Dou Jian-de; Tou Chien-tê (English spelling)
[Raw] Kentoku 2 (573)
[Died] Butoku 4 (621)
One of the heroes of the late Sui Dynasty in China. He had a sense of chivalry from a young age, and served as the commander of a 200-man unit in Emperor Yang's invasion of Goguryeo. His family was killed by the authorities for suspecting his involvement with bandit deserters and starving people, so he rebelled and became independent, calling himself King of Changle (617). He was generous to his subordinates and prisoners of war, and adopted a policy of placing government officials and scholars under his command. He expanded his power, establishing the Xia state centered in Hebei and Shandong, and proclaimed himself the Son of Heaven, but he was defeated in a battle with Li Shimin (later Emperor Taizong of Tang), taken prisoner, and executed in Chang'an.
