Kurozaemon Ohga

Year of birth: Unknown A red seal ship trader in the early Edo period. Son of Oga Jinshiro Nobuyoshi, the Oga clan is said to be a descendant of the Ogami clan, whose ancestors were local lords in Bungo Province (Oita Prefecture). In 1600 (Keicho 5), Jinshiro moved from Bungo Nakatsu to Hakata when Kuroda Nagamasa was transferred to another domain, and helped him build a castle. At this time, he changed his surname to Oga. Kurozaemon had an older brother, Zenbei, and a younger brother, Soemon, who were called Naka-Oga, Kami-Oga, and Shimo-Oga, respectively. All three became wealthy merchants in Hakata, but Kurozaemon lived in Goto-machi, Nagasaki, the base of Hakata merchants, and in 1519 he engaged in red seal ship trade with Tokunaga Muneya to Siam, and in 1520 he participated in a joint venture with six Hakata merchants including Suetsugu Munetoku to provide financing to domestic and foreign trade merchants, and was responsible for 13 kan of the total loan of 150 kan to a Portuguese captain, and thus engaged in a wide variety of trade. 江戸前期の朱印船貿易家。大賀甚四郎信好の子で,大賀氏は大神氏の子孫といわれ,豊後国(大分県)の土豪を祖先とする。慶長5(1600)年,甚四郎は黒田長政の転封にともない豊後中津から博多に移り,その築城を助ける。このとき,大賀と改姓した。九郎左衛門には兄の善兵衛,弟惣右衛門がおり,それぞれ中大賀,上大賀,下大賀といった。3人とも博多豪商となったが,九郎左衛門は博多商人の拠点である長崎五島町に居住し,同12年徳永宗也と共に暹羅に朱印船貿易を行い,同15年には末次宗得ら博多商人6人と共同出費による「投銀」(内外貿易商人への金融)に加わり,ポルトガル人カピタンへの総額150貫目の貸付のうち13貫目を担うなど,多彩な貿易を行った。だが,2代目九郎左衛門の妻が,密貿易家伊藤小左衛門の娘であったため,この中大賀は絶えた。<参考文献>武野要子『藩貿易史の研究』
