…Generally, it is understood as education that criticizes the outdatedness of education and innovates it, but in a more specific sense, it refers to the child-centered educational thought that arose in the European and American education circles from the late 19th century to the early 20th century and the attempts at educational reform based on it. In 1898, French educational reformer JE Demolins (1852-1907) published a book titled “New Education” in which he emphasized the reform of the secondary education curriculum and the importance of students' independent activities. At roughly the same time, new theories and practices were developed by C. Reddy of England, H. Lietz of Germany, and J. Dewey of America, and new education became a movement. In 1921, the International New Education Fellowship (Ligue Internationale pour l'Éducation nouvelle) was also formed as an organization for the international new education movement. …

…一般的には，それまでの教育の古さを批判し革新する教育，というように理解されているが，より限定した意味では，19世紀末から20世紀初頭にかけてヨーロッパ，アメリカの教育界を中心におこった児童中心主義的な教育思潮とそれにもとづく教育改革の試みをいう。1898年にフランスの教育改革者ドモランJ.E.Demolins(1852‐1907)が《新教育L’éducation nouvelle》と題する著作で，中等教育のカリキュラムの改革と生徒の自主的活動を重視すべきことを強調し，さらにほぼ同時期にイギリスのC.レディ，ドイツのH.リーツ，アメリカのJ.デューイらによって新しい理論や実践がなされたことで，新教育は一つの運動となった。1921年には国際的な新教育運動のための組織として国際新教育連盟Ligue Internationale pour l’Éducation nouvelle(International New Education Fellowship)も結成されるにいたった。…
