Born: 11th February 1800, Lacock Abbey Died September 17, 1877. Lacock Abbey. British scientist. Studied at Harrow School and Trinity College, Cambridge. Became a Member of Parliament in 1833, but retired the following year. He had a deep interest in photography, and in 1838 invented a method of fixing images called the calotype (later named after him as the Talbottype), which he patented in 1841. His method made it possible to make any number of positives from a negative, making a major contribution to the development of photography. He also had an interest in archaeology, and is counted among the first decipherers of the cuneiform inscriptions excavated at Nineveh. His Pencil of Nature (1844-46) was the first book to use photographs as illustrations.
