A former town in Soo County in the eastern part of Kagoshima Prefecture. It borders Miyakonojo City in Miyazaki Prefecture and is served by the Nippō Main Line. In addition to rice cultivation, the town produces tea, tobacco, vegetables and flowers, and is also active in livestock farming, including beef cattle and pig farming. 鹿児島県東部,曾於(そお)郡の旧町。宮崎県都城(みやこのじょう)市に接し,日豊本線が通じる。米作を行うほか,茶,タバコ,野菜,花卉(かき)を産し,肉牛,養豚など畜産も盛ん。2005年7月曾於郡大隅町,末吉町と合併し市制,曽於市となる。115.72km2。1万981人(2003)。
