Kuching - Kuching (English spelling)

The capital of Sarawak, Malaysia's Borneo state. It is located in the northwest of the state, 31 km upstream from the mouth of the Sarawak River, which flows into Datu Bay. Population: 152,310 (2000). It has long been a strategic location on the north coast of Borneo, but it developed rapidly after James Brooke established the Sarawak Kingdom in 1841 and made it its capital. The city is a major exporter of forest products and oil from the hinterland, and Kuching Wharf, completed in 1974, can accommodate ships of up to 15,000 tons. There is a daily scheduled flight between Kuala Lumpur and the city. The Sarawak Museum is known for its biological specimens.

マレーシア領ボルネオ島、サラワク州の州都。州の北西部にあり、ダトゥ湾に注ぐサラワク川河口から31キロメートル上流に位置する。人口15万2310（2000）。古くからボルネオ島北岸の要地であったが、1841年ジェームス・ブルークがサラワク王国をつくり、その首都としてから急速に発展した。後背地の林産物や石油の積み出しが盛んで、1974年完成のクチン埠頭(ふとう)は1万5000トンまでの船が入港できる。クアラ・ルンプールとの間に毎日定期航空の便がある。サラワク博物館は生物標本で知られる。
