Denim - Denim (English spelling)

Generally, it is a thick cotton fabric with a three-ply or four-ply warp twill weave, with the warp threads dyed dark brown or dark blue and the weft threads woven with bleached threads. Currently, there are also synthetic blends. The name denim comes from Serge de Nimes, a type of serge made in Nimes, France, and has been abbreviated to denim. There is a similar fabric to denim called dungaree, but it differs in that it uses the opposite yarns, with bleached warp threads and dyed weft threads. It is widely used for sportswear, trousers, work clothes, etc., as it is strong and practical, but fine count denim is also suitable for shirts and blouses.

一般に経(たて)糸を濃褐または濃紺に染色し、緯(よこ)糸に漂白した糸を織り込み、組織を経(たて)三枚綾(あや)または経四枚綾にした厚地の綿織物。現在では化合繊の混紡品もある。デニムとは、フランスのニームでつくられたサージSerge de Nimesからきていて、簡略化された名称となった。このデニムと似た生地(きじ)にダンガリーdungareeがあるが、糸使いが逆で、経糸に漂白糸を、緯糸に染色糸を使う点で違っている。スポーツウエア、ズボン、作業服など、じょうぶで実用的であるため広く用いられるが、細番手のものはシャツやブラウスにも向けられる。
