[Died] July 25, 2003. Palm Springs, California, United States. British film director. Full name John Richard Schlesinger. Set in his native England and the United States, Schlesinger produced a wide range of works characterized by detailed narrative. Born into a Jewish doctor's family, Schlesinger began his acting career while studying at Oxford University. In 1957, he made his debut as a director with a documentary film and a BBC television series. In 1961, his short documentary "Terminus," which depicts 24 hours in Waterloo Station in London, won the Grand Prix for Short Films at the Venice Film Festival. After making his feature film debut with A Kind of Loving (1962), he released works such as Darling (1965) starring Julie Christie, becoming one of Britain's leading film directors. As one of the directors of the new generation of British social realism, Schlesinger portrayed complex human relationships, especially the various forms of love, with a documentary touch. His American debut, Midnight Cowboy (1969), won the Academy Award for Best Picture and Best Director. After that, he directed Hollywood blockbusters such as Marathon Man (1976), but also small British films such as Yanks (1979). One of his later works was The Next Best Thing (2000). In 1970, he was awarded the Order of the British Empire (CBE).
