…During the Dutch War of Independence (1632), the city was occupied by the Dutch and remained an exclave until 1795. When the Belgian Revolution broke out in 1830, General BJC Dibbets (1782-1839) managed to defend the city and keep eastern Limburg, including the city, in Dutch hands. The churches Sint-Servaas (10th century) and Our Lady (early 11th century), both of which stand in the central square, are the oldest Romanesque buildings in the Netherlands. …
