Date of birth and death unknown. 5th Queen of the 18th Dynasty of Ancient Egypt (reigned from 1512 BC to 1490 BC). Born as the first daughter of Thutmose I, she married his concubine, Thutmose II. After the death of Thutmose II, she married her first daughter to Thutmose III, a concubine of Thutmose II, and became regent and took control of the country. She eventually took the title of king and built her tomb in the Valley of the Kings, the same place as the male kings. Her reign lasted 22 years. Her reign was peaceful, and art, architecture, and commerce flourished. The terraced temples of Deir el-Bahari were her most original architecture, and the only one of its kind in ancient Egypt. Meanwhile, she sent large merchant fleets to Punt (Somalia) far to the south to import spices and other products in abundance, leaving illustrations of them on the walls of the temple mentioned above. In 1903, two female mummies were discovered in the Valley of the Kings, and in 2007 the Egyptian Ministry of Antiquities announced that DNA testing had identified one of them as Hatshepsut.
