French physician and philosopher. After studying at the Collège de Caen and Paris, he obtained his doctorate in medicine from the University of Reims in 1733. He then studied under Boerhaave at the University of Leiden, and in 1742 was appointed surgeon to the French Guard. He served in the Battle of Flanders, but lost his position in 1745 after publishing his book The Natural History of the Soul, which expressed a materialistic position. Three years later, he published Man Machine, which furthered that position, arguing that man is a machine and that human thought is merely a property of the brain.

フランスの医師，哲学者。カンとパリのコレージュ(高等学校)で学んだのち，1733年ランス大学で医学博士の学位を得た。ついでライデン大学でブールハーフェの教えを受け，42年にフランス近衛隊付き軍医に任命された。フランドルの戦闘に従軍したが，45年に唯物論的立場を表明した著書《魂の自然誌》を刊行したため，軍医の地位を失った。3年後，さらにその立場を推し進めた《人間機械論》を発表，人間は機械であり，人間の思考は，脳髄の単なる性質にすぎないと主張した。
