1709‐51 French physician and philosopher. After studying at the Collège de Caen and Paris, he obtained his doctorate in medicine from the University of Reims in 1733. He then studied under Boerhaave at the University of Leiden, and in 1742 was appointed surgeon to the French Guard. He served in the Battle of Flanders, but lost his position in 1745 after publishing his book The Natural History of the Soul, which expressed a materialistic position. Three years later, he published Man Machine, which furthered that position, arguing that man is a machine and that human thought is merely a property of the brain.
