A former town in Akumi County, in the eastern part of the Shonai Plain, in the northwest of Yamagata Prefecture. It is located along the Mogami River. The town's center is Matsumine, which developed as a castle town, and itabu (wheat gluten) sheets are manufactured here. Rice is the main crop, and the town also cultivates fruit trees, raises livestock, and does forestry. In November 2005, it was incorporated into Sakata City along with Hirata Town and Yahata Town in Akumi County. 42.92 km2 .
