Diaz de la Peña, N. (English spelling)

…The name comes from Barbizon, a village on the edge of the Fontainebleau Forest in the southeast suburbs of Paris. T. Rousseau settled in the village from 1847, and Millet from 1849. Others who lived there for long or short periods included Charles Jacques (1813-94), Daubigny, and Narcisse Diaz de la Peña (1807-76), who all worked on landscape painting together. The origins of the Barbizon School can be traced back to the French landscape paintings of G. Michel, PH de Valenciennes, and Corot, which gradually moved away from constructed ideal landscapes and began to celebrate the beauty of real landscapes based on natural observations, and further back to the 17th century Dutch landscape paintings, which fascinated them with the works of Ruisdael, Hobbema, and van Ostade, who praised the natural beauty of their own country. …

It was said that he had given up his pride in painting these works for the sake of money, but he continued to use this technique until much later, even after his subjects shifted to paintings of peasants. …
