... The Russian proletarian literature movement had a major international impact. Already during World War I, the German Expressionist literary movement and the works of H. Barbusse and Paul Vaillant-Couturier (1892-1937) in France were considered to be the forerunners of proletarian literature in a broad sense, and the same tendency was observed in the literature of U.B. Sinclair and J. London in the United States, but it was only after the Russian Revolution of 1917 that it became a conscious literary movement. In Germany, the Proletarian Cultural League was formed in 1919, and E. Toller, B. Brecht, J.R. Becher, and A. Segers were active as proletarian writers.
