An annual plant of the legume family. It grows naturally on sunny riverbanks and grasslands. It grows upright, 30-60cm tall, and branches sparsely. The leaves are even-pinnate and alternate. There are many small leaflets, which close at night. The flowers are yellow with five petals, not butterfly-shaped, and have four stamens. It produces pods about 3cm long. The stems and leaves can be dried and drunk as tea, which has a diuretic effect.
