descriptive psychiatry

...A concept that represents a certain standpoint in psychiatry. In contrast to descriptive psychiatry, which describes and classifies a static cross-sectional image of mental symptoms and phenomena, this approach seeks to grasp and understand the mechanisms and meanings of mental phenomena in a longitudinal and dynamic manner. The central theory is Freud's psychoanalysis, but A. Meyer's ideas on psychobiology also belong to the same lineage, and became popular in the United States, where he lived.
