This refers to a style of furniture leg that curves in an S-shape. It originated from a Chinese craftwork that resembled the legs of a dragon clutching a jewel, and was brought to Europe through Dutch trade in the late 17th century. The word cabriole is a French ballet term meaning "jump," but the word goes back to the Italian "capriola" (the leap of a doe). It was first introduced to French furniture in the late Louis XIV period, and was introduced to Britain and other European countries around 1700. The knees of cabriole legs used in British Queen Anne style chairs and tables were carved with scallop shells, but cabriole legs from the early Georgian period featured elaborate lion masks and foliage.
