An uninhabited andesitic active volcanic island on the Volcanic Island Ridge, under the jurisdiction of the Ogasawara Subprefecture of Tokyo. It is located 930 km south of Tokyo, 130 km west of Chichijima, at 27°15′N and 140°53′E. Its area is approximately 0.29 square kilometers. Its elevation is 25 meters (2013). In 1973 (Showa 48), the first recorded eruption occurred on the nearby seabed, creating Nishinoshima Shinto. The eruption ended the following year, but the new island was connected to the main island, with an area three times that of the main island, which is 77,000 square meters. It is the only natural increase in land area in Japan since the war. The new island has been deformed severely due to marine erosion. Its former name was Rosario Island, which was used until the beginning of the 20th century, after the name of the Spanish sailing ship that discovered the island in 1702 (Genroku 15). On November 20, 2013, it erupted 500 meters south-southeast, and the new island became one with Nishinoshima. As of February 2014, it had an area of 0.72 square kilometers and a peak of 66 meters.
