…He inherited the fortune from his brother and increased it tenfold. He bought lands from 1507 onwards, and was made count in 1514, but he did not use the title himself, instead acting as a merchant. He was devoted to charity and donations, and in 1514 he built the Fuggerei, a low-rent housing estate in Augsburg for the poor and devout, which had 52 tenants in 1523. The assets reached their peak under his nephew Anton Fugger (1493-1560), who took over the family business, but the quality of the assets deteriorated due to an increase in unsecured debts. …
