Love-hate feelings. Used when an individual's feelings and inclinations simultaneously include opposing directions. It has been translated as "ambiversion," "ambivalence," "double value," etc., but there is no set translation. It is derived from the German word Ambivalenz, and is said to have been created by E. Bleuler. S. Freud argued that instincts have opposing tendencies at the same time, and an example of this is sadism and masochism.
