An old town in Motoyoshi County, northeastern Miyagi Prefecture. The main settlement is on the coast of Shizugawa Bay, and during the Edo period it was under the direct control of the Date clan and traded raw silk and marine products. Agriculture includes tobacco leaves, vegetables, and livestock, while fishing involves intermediate cultivation of abalone, sea cucumbers, flounder, and other fisheries. The Kesennuma Line runs through the town. There is a tropical plant community (a natural monument) on Tsubakishima Island in the bay. In October 2005, it merged with Utatsu Town, Motoyoshi County, to become Minamisanriku Town, Motoyoshi County. 124.23 km2 . Population: 13,848 (2003). 宮城県北東部,本吉郡の旧町。志津川湾岸に主集落があり,江戸時代伊達(だて)氏の直轄地で生糸,海産物が取引された。農業では葉タバコ,野菜,畜産などを行い,漁業ではアワビ,ナマコ,ヒラメなどの中間育成などを行う。気仙沼線が通じる。湾内の椿島に暖地性植物群落(天然記念物)がある。2005年10月,本吉郡歌津町と合併し町制,本吉郡南三陸町となる。124.23km2。1万3848人(2003)。
