1903‐91 German philosopher and educator. After serving as professor at the universities of Giessen and Mainz, he has been professor at the University of Tübingen since 1953. He studied with Heidegger, but he stands in the tradition of Dilthey and the "philosophy of life" through Georg Misch. In particular, while Heidegger's concept of Dasein and Sartre's concept of existence contain a sense of tragedy and crisis, he philosophically explained the continuity and multifaceted nature of life, and the virtue of mutual trust hidden in culture. Because his work lacked social reach, it was criticized by the critical theory of the Frankfurt School and others. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
