Dementia praecox (English spelling)

Dementia praecox (English spelling)

…First, in his Clinical Studies (1852), the French BA Morel named the psychiatric illness that develops in young people and progresses rapidly to dementia as dementia praecox, while in Germany, KL Karl Baum named the illness, which includes the opposing states of psychomotor excitement and stupor, as catatonia in 1874 (some say in 1863). E. Hecker named the illness that begins in adolescence, shows emotional blunting and a lack of motivation, and leads to a defective state as hebephrenie in 1871. Finally, E. Kraepelin combined the last two in his Textbook of Psychiatry, 6th edition in 1899, and added delusional dementia to it, calling it dementia praecox. However, as more cases were observed, it became clear that dementia in the normal sense did not occur, nor did it always begin in adolescence, but that the problem lay in a breakdown in mental function. E. Bleuler of Switzerland began to use the new term "schizophrenia," and this became known throughout the world in his major work, Dementia praecox or the Schizophrenic Complex (1911).
