A city on the southern shore of Lake Rotorua in the mid-northern part of New Zealand's North Island. Population 64,473 (2001). Located in a geothermal area, it is a tourist and resort destination with hot springs and geysers. There are many large and small lakes in the area, including Lake Rotorua, as well as the valleys that flow into the lakes and surrounding forests, making it ideal for walking. Nearby Whakarewarewa is a restored indigenous Maori village, and there is also a craft school that teaches traditional Maori culture.
