Dredging and reclamation work

Japanese: 浚渫埋立業 - しゅんせつうめたてぎょう

This industry involves dredging bottom sediment to widen river channels and increase the depth of navigation channels and anchorages, as well as land reclamation work using the collected sediment. In Japan, a country surrounded by sea on all sides, the industry has a long history, with many major companies founded during the Meiji and Taisho periods, such as Penta-Ocean Construction, founded in 1896, and Toa Construction, founded in 1908. The industry experienced rapid growth in the late 1960s. At the time, there was active construction of industrial ports and large-scale land reclamation work for the construction of coastal petrochemical complexes, and demand for the dredging industry increased steadily.

河川の流路の拡幅，航路･泊地の水深増加等を目的にした水底土砂の浚渫(さらいとること)作業，および採取した土砂による埋立作業等を行う産業。四方を海に囲まれた日本においてはその歴史は古く，五洋建設が1896年創立，東亜建設工業が1908年創立など，大手企業の多くは明治から大正時代に創業されている。当業界が急成長を遂げたのは1960年代後半である。当時は産業港湾建設工事，あるいは臨海型石油化学コンビナート等建設のための大規模埋立工事が活発に行われており，浚渫業界に対する需要は順調に増加した。
