Metalwork is produced mainly in Kanazawa City, Ishikawa Prefecture. It is said to have originated when Maeda Toshinaga, the second lord of the Kaga domain, invited craftsmen from Kyoto to develop sword-equipping techniques. The craftsmen's armor, especially stirrups, became renowned as masterpieces. After the Meiji Restoration, the craftsmanship declined for a time, but was revived with the production of vases, incense burners, tea ceremony utensils, and other items.
