Imidazole - Imidazoru (English spelling)

Imidazole - Imidazoru (English spelling)

A heterocyclic compound containing two nitrogen atoms in the ring. Also known as 1,3-diazole. It is produced by reacting glyoxal with formaldehyde and ammonia.

It is a colorless crystal that is strongly alkaline. It dissolves well in water, ethanol (ethyl alcohol), and ether, and dissolves in acid to form salts. It reacts with cobalt(II) ions to produce a blue-purple precipitate, making it a useful reagent for detecting cobalt. When it is nitrated with mixed acid (a mixture of nitric acid and sulfuric acid), it forms 4-nitroimidazole.
