雨上がりに、太陽と反対方向の地表から空にかけて現れる7色の円弧状の帯。空中の水滴によって太陽光が分散されて生じる。外側が赤、内側が紫の主虹（第一次虹）のほかに、離れてその外側に、色の配列が逆の副虹（第二次虹）が見えることがある。《季夏》「―立ちて忽たちまち君の在る如ごとし／虚子」
[補説]現代日本では一般に、赤せき・橙とう・黄おう・緑りょく・青せい・藍らん・紫しの7色と考えるが、時代や文化により認識される色数は異なる。

にじ【虹】［書名］

《原題The Rainbow》ローレンスによる長編小説。1915年刊。中部イングランドの農場を舞台に、3代にわたる父子の愛欲と結婚の諸相を描く。刊行当初、性描写がわいせつであるとの理由で発禁処分を受けた。
千家元麿の第2詩集。大正8年（1919）刊。
藤井重夫の小説。大阪の戦災孤児たちを描いた作品。昭和40年（1965）発表。同年、第53回直木賞受賞。
