The Arabic word for voluntary charity by Muslims. It is a loanword from the Hebrew sedāqā and originally meant "correctness of faith." It is sometimes used synonymously with the poor tax zakat, so to distinguish it from the latter, sadaqa, which means charity, is sometimes called "voluntary sadaqa" (sadaqa al-tatawwu`).
