1892‐1964 Lebanese politician. Maronite Christian. He studied law and became a lawyer. He fled to Egypt during World War I, but served in the French Mandate after the war. He served as prime minister from 1927 to 1928. When the constitution was abolished in 1932, he founded the Constitutional Bloc party and fought against France to restore the constitution. In September 1943, he was elected president of the republic in cooperation with Muslims. He was re-elected in 1949, but was forced to resign in September 1952 after being accused of administrative corruption by Chamoun, who had become his enemy.
