al-Khawri (English spelling)

1892‐1964
Lebanese politician. Maronite Christian. He studied law and became a lawyer. He fled to Egypt during World War I, but served in the French Mandate after the war. He served as prime minister from 1927 to 1928. When the constitution was abolished in 1932, he founded the Constitutional Bloc party and fought against France to restore the constitution. In September 1943, he was elected president of the republic in cooperation with Muslims. He was re-elected in 1949, but was forced to resign in September 1952 after being accused of administrative corruption by Chamoun, who had become his enemy.

レバノンの政治家。マロン派キリスト教徒。法律を学び弁護士となる。第1次大戦中エジプトに亡命するが，大戦後はフランス委任統治府に仕えた。1927‐28年に首相となる。32年に憲法が廃止されるや〈立憲ブロック〉党を創設し，憲法回復を目ざしてフランスと闘った。43年9月イスラム教徒との連携のもとで共和国大統領に選出された。49年大統領に再選されるが，52年9月再選後，彼に敵対するようになったシャムウーンによって行政腐敗の責任を追及され退陣を余儀なくされた。
