1809‐37 Spanish critic. Born in Madrid, his father joined Napoleon's side during the War of Independence, so he fled to France after the war. He received his primary education there. He was amnestied and returned to Spain in 1817. He married at the age of 20, but the marriage was a complete failure, so he devoted himself to his career as a journalist. Under the pen name of Figaro, he delivered sharp criticism of politics, society, customs, and theater. He was very well received, and even served as a member of parliament. He visited Paris again in 1835 and was exposed to the refinement of French culture. With his critical, humorous, and satirical spirit, he tried to correct the customs of his native country and raise its cultural standard to that of the more advanced countries of Europe.
