Spanish critic. Born in Madrid, his father joined Napoleon's side during the War of Independence, so he fled to France after the war. He received his primary education there. He was amnestied and returned to Spain in 1817. He married at the age of 20, but the marriage was a complete failure, so he devoted himself to his career as a journalist. Under the pen name of Figaro, he delivered sharp criticism of politics, society, customs, and theater. He was very well received, and even served as a member of parliament. He visited Paris again in 1835 and was exposed to the refinement of French culture. With his critical, humorous, and satirical spirit, he tried to correct the customs of his native country and raise its cultural standard to that of the more advanced countries of Europe.

スペインの批評家。マドリードに生まれたが，独立戦争で父がナポレオン側に加わったため，戦後，フランスに亡命。同地で初等教育を受けた。1817年に恩赦で帰国。20歳のときに結婚するが，完全な失敗に終わり，ジャーナリストとしての道に専念。フィガロの筆名で政治，社会，風俗，演劇に対してしんらつな批評を展開。非常な好評を博し，代議士も務めた。35年に再びパリを訪れ，洗練されたフランス文化に接した彼は，批判的･諧謔（かいぎやく）的･風刺的精神でもって，祖国の風俗を正し，文化水準をヨーロッパ先進諸国のそれにまで高めようと努力した。
