… The concepts that lead to today's schizophrenia finally began to appear in succession in the latter half of the 19th century. First, in his Clinical Studies (1852), the French BA Morel named the psychiatric illness that develops in young people and progresses rapidly to dementia as “dementia praecox,” while in Germany, KL Karl Baum named the illness, which includes the contradictory states of psychomotor excitement and stupor, as “catatonia” in 1874 (some say in 1863). In 1871, E. Hecker named the illness that begins in adolescence, shows emotional blunting and apathy, and leads to a defective state as “hebephrenie,” and finally, E. Kraepelin combined the other two in the sixth edition of his Textbook of Psychiatry in 1899, adding “delusional dementia” to it and calling it “dementia praecox.” …
