The German film industry was led by the German director, Robert F. Pommer, who was a director of the German-Eastern German Film Company, and the German director of the German-West Film Company, Robert F. Pommer. The first postwar German film was the East German film The Murderer Is Among Us (1946) directed by newcomer Wolfgang Staudte, followed by Somewhere in Berlin (1947) directed by Lamprecht, A Wedding in the Shadows (1947) directed by Kurt Maetzig, which dealt with the persecution of the Jews, and Daily Bread (1949) directed by Slatan Dudu. Maetzig's The Council of the Gods (1950), which criticised the warmongers, was particularly known as a masterpiece.
