...It is believed that they then followed the indigenous Arawak people north from the Lesser Antilles to the Greater Antilles. The word Carib was already found in documents from the early 16th century (Caraiba), and was also recorded as Caniba in Columbus's voyages. The word cannibalism, which refers to eating people, is derived from this word.
