A pair of gauges with maximum and minimum permissible dimensions for the object being inspected. Because the upper and lower limit dimensions can be detected, it is easy to inspect whether products machined in a factory are finished within the specified tolerances. There are limit gauges for shafts (for inspecting the outside dimensions) and for holes (for inspecting the inside dimensions), and each has a go side and a no go side. For shafts, the go side gauge dimension is the maximum dimension, and the product must pass through it. The no go side is the minimum dimension, and the product is not allowed to pass through it. For holes, the relationship is reversed. Usually, a snap gauge or ring gauge is used for shafts, and a plug gauge or bar gauge is used for holes. In this type of inspection, a product that passes on the go side and stops on the no go side is considered to be a passing product. The invention of the limit gauge method made it possible for mass production of interchangeable parts to be carried out economically for the first time.

被検査物に許し得る最大寸法と最小寸法をもつ１対のゲージ。上下の限界寸法が検出できるので，工場の作業において工作された製品が所定の公差内に仕上げられているかどうかを簡単に検査できる。限界ゲージには軸用（外側寸法の検査用）と穴用（内側寸法の検査用）があり，それぞれに通り側と止り側とがある。軸用では通り側ゲージの寸法は最大寸法で，製品はこれを通り抜けるものでなければならない。止り側は最小寸法で，製品がこれを通ることは許されない。穴用ではこの逆の関係になる。ふつう軸用にははさみゲージ，リングゲージ，穴用にはプラグゲージ，棒ゲージなどを用いる。このような検査で通り側で通り，止り側で止まった製品が合格品となる。限界ゲージ方式の案出で初めて互換性のある部品の大量生産が経済的に行われるようになった。
