Cebu [island] - Cebu
A long, narrow island stretching from north to south in the central Philippines. It is made up of hilly mountainous areas. It is the most densely populated island in the Philippines and has been developed since ancient times. It is rich in underground resources, with the largest coal and copper reserves in the country. It is home to the Cebuano people, the largest ethnic group in the Philippines. It is known as the island where Magellan arrived in 1521 and died in a battle with the local inhabitants. Its main products are corn, copra, and sugar cane. There are many immigrants to various parts of the country. The capital is Cebu. 4,422 km2 . Population: 2.64 million (1990).
