Fig wasp

Japanese: イチジクコバチ

A general term for the Ficus family of the Hymenoptera order. Many of these species are tiny, less than 2 mm long, and more than 10 species are known from Japan, including A. nigricans and A. schidigera. Many species are known overseas, mainly in tropical regions, and this overlaps with the distribution of the Ficus genus. The fig genus has a unique flower shape, so it is only pollinated by fig wasps, and in this case, there is strictly one species of wasp for each plant. Research into this close symbiotic relationship and the speciation of the two suggests that the current species were formed through the mutual influence of bees and plants. This phenomenon is called coevolution, and the relationship between the two is considered a typical example.

膜翅目イチジクコバチ科の総称。体長2mm以下の微小種が多く，イヌビワコバチ，イタビコバチなど，日本からは10種以上が知られる。海外では熱帯域を中心に多くの種が知られるが，これはイチジク属の分布と重なる。イチジク属は花の形態が特異であるため，唯一イチジクコバチ類によって受粉されるが，この場合，植物１種に対してハチ１種が厳密に対応している。こうした密接な共生関係と両者の種分化について調べられた結果，ハチと植物が互いに影響をおよぼしあって，現在の種が形成されたことが示唆された。このような現象を共進化というが，両者の関係はその典型的な例とされる。
