1629‐76 The second Tsar of the Romanov dynasty of Russia. Reigned 1645-76. Father of Peter I. At the beginning of his reign, the powerful nobleman Boris Morozov and his party held real power. The resentment of the city residents against him and his party came to the surface in Moscow and other cities in 1648 as the Salt Revolt, triggered by a rise in the price of salt, which was a monopoly on the country. He forced Morozov to resign and, in response to petitions from the nobles and upper echelons of the city residents, convened a national assembly (Zemsky Sobor) to compile a new legal code.
