Defending the coast against enemy invasion from the sea or rivers. Throughout history, coastal defense has been an important mission of the military. The Roman Empire is particularly famous for building fortifications along the coast. Until World War II, coastal defense was centered on pre-constructed fortifications and positions centered around pillboxes. During World War II, the German and Japanese armies built sturdy coastal defense positions in Europe and on islands in the Pacific Ocean. Another method of coastal defense is to not defend fixed positions, but to mobilize and concentrate on the enemy's landing or landing points to destroy them. Today, due to the lessons learned from World War II and the development of weapons, countries no longer build fortifications.
