Born 1033 in Aosta, Northern Italy Died: April 21, 1109. Archbishop of Canterbury, Benedictine, Doctor of the Church, and Saint. Father of scholastic philosophy. His life is divided into his time as a theologian at the monastery of Le Bec, and his time as Bishop of Canterbury, during which he dedicated himself to the freedom and rights of the Church amid the conflict between church and state. In his early period, he wrote works such as Monologion, known for its proof of the existence of God, Proslogion, and De Veritate, based on the Credo ut intelligam (I believe because I may understand), and in his later period, he wrote Cur Deus Homo, famous for its theory of atonement. His philosophy was based on Aurelius Augustine, and was evangelical, emphasizing that powerless human beings, corrupted from birth, cannot be saved without God's grace. Anselm |
