…A Christian sect that arose in North Africa in the 4th century. Its first leader was Donatus (died 355). After the death of Mensurius, the bishop of Carthage, Caecilianus was chosen, but Felix, who had ordained him, was opposed by 70 bishops and priests of Numidia on the grounds of treachery during the persecution of Diocletian. This resulted in a double election (312). Those who supported the latter elected Donatus in place of Majorinus, who died shortly after, and, citing the authority of Cyprian, the martyr of Carthage, declared the sacraments performed by the clergy who had refused to confess their faith during the persecution to be invalid. …
