A maritime force that enforces maritime law along the country's coast and is responsible for salvage at sea. It is equipped with small ships and aircraft. It was established in various countries in the early 19th century to crack down on smuggling. It also maintains and manages navigational aids such as lighthouses and buoys. Some countries also have the task of breaking ice on canals and lakes, and conducting and announcing meteorological observations. The coast guards of the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, and other countries are well known, and in Japan the Japan Coast Guard is the equivalent.
