Naginata Koju - Naginata Koju

Japanese:
Naginata Koju - Naginata Koju

An annual plant of the Lamiaceae family (APG classification: Lamiaceae). The stem is square, 30-60 cm tall, sparsely hairy and branched. The leaves are opposite, narrowly ovate, with short stalks, and have a unique fragrance when crushed. From September to November, slender inflorescences form at the ends of the upper branches, and small, pale pink-purple flowers grow densely in one direction. The name comes from the resemblance of the inflorescence to that of a naginata (long sword). It grows on roadsides and grasslands in mountainous areas, and is widely distributed from the temperate zone of Asia to the Himalayas and the former Soviet Union. The closely related Myrtillus fasciatus has broad leaves and thick inflorescences, and is distributed in Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu south of Miyagi Prefecture.
