The abbreviation of Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO). Founded in 1958 under the Japan External Trade Organization Act as a special corporation that comprehensively handles business related to the promotion of trade in Japan (the successor to the Overseas Market Research Institute, established in 1951). In October 2003, it was reorganized and renamed as an independent administrative institution. Its activities include overseas market research, holding trade fairs, advertising export products, trade mediation, and development, research and support for developing countries. During this time, it was merged with the Institute of Developing Economies in 1998.

日本貿易振興機構の英語名称Japan External Trade Organizationの略。日本の貿易振興に関する事業を総合的に行う特殊法人〈日本貿易振興会〉として，同会法に基づき1958年設立（1951年設立の海外市場調査会の後身）。2003年10月独立行政法人として改組・改称された。業務は海外市場調査，見本市開催，輸出品の宣伝，貿易の斡旋(あっせん)，開発途上国に対する開発・研究と支援など。この間1998年アジア経済研究所と統合した。
