During the Roman Empire, foreign tribes were forced to settle in the empire and become farmers. They were mainly Germanic peoples who surrendered or were captured. Especially from the 3rd century onwards, many Germanic people were given land, mainly on state-owned land in Gaul, and settled there. The Rhaeti had no freedom of movement, and some were obligated to serve in the military. It is thought that the origin of this system lay within the Germanic people themselves.
