A province in the eastern part of the Netherlands, bordering Germany on the east. Area: 4,995 km2, population: 1,865,000 (1995). Capital: Arnhem. Historically, it was a regional name. The province occupies a wide area from the IJsselmeer in the north to the Rhine-Maas in the south, and is made up of three regions: the Veluwe (northern hilly area, shrub forest), the Rhine-Maas alluvial plain, and the Achterhück (inner plain). This is due to the historical background of the Geldern dukes, based in Geldern in the Rhine region of Germany, who expanded their influence into the Low Countries in the 13th century and integrated each region into their territory.
