After 1380 - 1436
A commoner leader in the struggle for Swedish independence against the Kalmar Union. In 1434, he led an uprising of independent miners and farmers in Dalarna, expelling Danish forces from the whole country. In 1435, he was elected one of two "rulers", but was assassinated the following year. The national assembly in Arboga that elected him was irregular, but it was made up of representatives of the clergy, nobility, townspeople, and farmers, and is considered to be Sweden's first parliament, the Riksdag.
